Mizar Energies is expanding into fuel retail by targeting Nigeria’s busiest trade and commuter routes, beginning with its first outlet at Km 45, Badagry Expressway in Lagos. Benjamin Ekwebelam, group chief executive officer of Mizar Eridanus Holdings Limited, stated the company aims to differentiate through verified fuel quality, accurate dispensing, and reliable product availability.
Location Choice and Market Timing
The Badagry Expressway was selected for its high daily traffic, including commuters from western Lagos communities, commercial buses, and heavy haulage vehicles moving toward the West African border. Ekwebelam noted motorists on this corridor frequently struggle to find a trustworthy station. The Agogo Igbala site offered direct expressway access and space to serve both private and commercial vehicles.
Timing aligned with deregulation opening the market to efficient operators and improved local supply reliability. Ekwebelam added that Mizar’s own sourcing and trading business had matured sufficiently to ensure consistent stocking. “The conditions for doing retail properly are in place, so it was the right time to start,” he said.
Retail Strategy and Customer Promise
Mizar’s move into retail follows years of upstream operations in sourcing, trading, and logistics. Ekwebelam explained that controlling the final customer touchpoint—the pump—was critical to building industry trust. “That is where trust in the whole industry is won or lost,” he said. Retail provides a steadier revenue stream and better utilizes the group’s supply chain expertise.
Customers can expect three core guarantees: honest measurement of fuel, verified product quality, and consistent availability. Pumps will be calibrated and regularly checked, fuel will be tested upon receipt, and logistics capabilities ensure stations remain stocked. Additional features include transparent pricing, clean forecourts, and attentive service.
Quality Assurance and Calibration Systems
Mizar’s quality control begins before products reach depots. All fuel is sourced from licensed refineries with full documentation. Trucks are sealed at loading and inspected on arrival before discharge. Product is sampled and tested before release into storage tanks.
At the station, daily tank reconciliation identifies discrepancies between incoming stock and sales. Pumps undergo regular calibration and certification checks per regulatory standards, with documentation ensuring consistency regardless of personnel. These procedures are embedded in standardized operating protocols.

Controls Against Adulteration and Short-Dispensing
To prevent adulteration, Mizar employs sealed deliveries, testing on receipt, and retains batch samples for traceability. Pump calibration and daily reconciliation between tank levels and metered sales detect short-dispensing immediately. “If the numbers do not match, we know the same day,” Ekwebelam explained.
The company avoids performance metrics that incentivize corner-cutting and conducts unannounced internal audits. Digital monitoring systems will expand as the network grows, but integrity is built into operations from day one.
Expansion Strategy and Investment
The Badagry station is the first in a planned national network, with immediate focus on proving the model’s profitability and consistency. Expansion targets major trade and commuter routes, starting in Lagos and the South West before extending to corridors where existing trading operations ensure supply reliability.
Ekwebelam declined to specify station targets, emphasizing each site must meet economic criteria. Expansion combines acquisitions of existing stations and greenfield builds where strategic locations lack suitable facilities. A dealer or partnership model could come later, but only after systems and training mature.
Investments proceed site-by-site, with strict return thresholds governing each commitment. “We want Mizar Energies to strengthen the group’s balance sheet as it grows, not stretch it,” Ekwebelam said.
Financial Approach and Competitive Positioning
Deregulation rewards efficient, trusted operators, and Mizar Energies intends to embody both qualities. Domestic refining growth, including Dangote’s capacity, enhances supply reliability and reduces import dependency. The company plans competitive pricing through strong sourcing relationships, but emphasizes trust over low cost.
Integrity distinguishes Mizar Energies in a market plagued by fuel quality issues. Daily tank reconciliation and calibrated pumps detect discrepancies immediately.
